Implications of the Upright Position or Positive Pole

As the fastest land animal on the planet, the Cheetah, symbolizes speed with Agility. The energy of this card in the positive pole is one of quick mind, reactions, and wit. But, they are sprinters and need to rest after capturing their meal. They have an extremely high metabolism and can run out of
fuel quickly. It is best to know when to sprint and when to simply walk. This can be an exercise in self-restraint.

+ Agile

(sprint, nimble, effervescent, elastic, spirited, sprightly, irrepressible, chatty, avant-guard)

  1. Agile of mind and body this card confers a quickness to move and respond with a cleverness of wit. Act fast and glide over obstacles.
  2. The messenger had better be agile and know what they are about to say, lest they be killed for bringing a message that is unwelcome or poorly delivered.
  3. An intellect that is nimble, flexible and yet aware of its premises, can hear another’s point of view, examine it, take in new information or readily find the mistaken assumptions of ideas presented to it. Mercury brings messages all the time!
  4. The communication road is wide open! Negotiate the hair pin turns with your words and your wit.
  5. A Mercurial mind can move fast than its awareness. A nervous speaker might stammer or be glib. Relax, you brilliant soul. Take a breath and have confidence that you will get your points across.
  6. Mobility is the key. Be ready to move.
  7. The situation calls for a slight of hand. Move quickly so that it can’t be seen.
  8. The god Hermes (Mercury for the Romans) was the overseer of health and medicine. If this card is visiting you, it might be time to review your medications or perhaps look at some new healing methods to treat some ongoing condition.
  9. If you have a Mercurial Body type, you might find yourself often anxious and ready to leap. Squirrels and sparrows are constantly taking in their surroundings. Do the same.
  10. The messenger had better be agile of words and footing, lest they be killed for bringing a message that is unwelcome or poorly delivered.
  11. You are twitching like a live wire. When was the last time you ate? Get nourishment and grounded! Calm yourself with immediate self care.
Quotation Illustrating this concept…
  • “I feel real light, mobile and agile. I feel I can run longer. My endurance is up.”  Glen Davis
  • “Agility … is a theme that runs through almost everything we’re talking about these days. We can’t know what the future’s going to look like. We have to be agile enough to be able to respond to that uncertainty.”   Linton Wells
  • “All things come to him who waits, and among them is that unpleasant sensation of a cold hand upon the portion of the body which lies behind the third waistcoat button.” ― P.G. Wodehouse, The White Feather
  • “It’s okay to have butterflies, you just have to tell them to fly into formation.” ― Richard Endres

Implications of the Reversed Position or Negative Pole

Nervous people often smoke, or eat, or fidget, or run, or do just about anything to discharge that energy out of them. They are not always thin of body, but the limbs are often lithe. That disposition of quick, or nervous, edginess is playing our here and can appear underlying health conditions like hypertension, shallow breathing or ADHD.

– Nervous

(Edgy, clammy, gawky, slippery, elusive, effete, volatile, erratic, flighty, temperamental, quirky)

  1. This Body Type is favored by those who like an agile mind, quick wit; and in the positive pole, keen but stealthy perception. Because it tends to favor narrow, long, and flexible bone structures, people of this Body Type often make exceptional runners, acrobats, swimmers, gymnasts and models; where extension and playability is an advantage. Got any of these?
  2. Feeling anxious, restless or hyper because of unchecked mental chatter? Nervous energy like that is usually annoying to everyone else as well. Does someone need to burn of some energy? Get grounded by using your tension in an applied way…take a walk and mellow out!
  3. A nervous speaker can stammer or be glib. A mercurial mind moves faster than its awareness. If a message is unclear, slow down, take a breath and ask for clarification.
  4. The messenger had better be agile of words and footing, lest they be killed for bringing a message that is unwelcome or poorly delivered.
  5. Tension is signaling you that there is a strain somewhere. Are you handling stress?
  6. Someone needs to burn off some nervous energy. Stop the stimulation, NOW!
  7. You are twitching like a live wire. Get grounded!
  8. Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, watch what you are doing or land on that candle stick. Don’t place too much confidence in being clever or witty, it might just get you impaled.
  9. Mercury in retrograde? You’re going backward fast! Can you put on the brakes before it breaks the situation?
  10. Beware of a mercurial or jittery person. Their thinking is generally erratic and seldom dependable.
  11. Get grounded by using your tension (eustress) in an applied way…take a walk and mellow out!
  12. Friedrich Nietzsche, for all of his Mercurial wit and musings, had the awareness to recognize that the mind can sabotage the heart when he noted that “Wit is the epitaph of an emotion.” Try not to be the deceptive Artisan with your own feelings, speak to them rather than gloss over them with some philosophical excuse or banter.

Relevance in the Michael Teaching

This Body Type is favored by those who like an agile mind, quick wit; and in the positive pole, keen but stealthy perception. Because it tends to favor narrow, long, and flexible bone structures, people of this Body Type often make exceptional runners, swimmers, and gymnasts; where extension is an advantage.

The person with these abilities can be as fast with a comeback, as they can be with moving quickly like the winged feet of the God which carries its name. In the American culture, both speed and wit, like speed of foot and quickness of tongue, are highly valued traits. When in use by the likes of a Robin Williams, a Venusian-Mercurial, truth can be issued like darts from a blowgun. It leaves its prey as paralyzed and helpless. Be careful of the reactions of others.

Intended by Essence for use in augmenting one’s ability to “think fast” and “jump quickly”; this Body Type’s metabolism and neural network is apt to be running flat-out, all the time! Hence, physical weight gain and calm minds, are NOT a common part of its make-up. High output can be expected from this Body Type as a result, but so to can burnout from a hyperactive use.

Once the subtlety of Mercury has run its course, the pontification of the Jupiter enters the picture. Meant as an energy of presence, potency, and declaration to take-up-space, this Body Type makes one very visible and puts others on alert to your presence. If this symbolic energy is your mantle to wear, then you might want to do it with as much majesty as you can muster. Perhaps you are ready to practice a bit of the center stage?

Cultural Significance

Johnny Carson was the King of the quick comebacks. This Mercurial Sage was known to exploit any weakness in the statement of another when he thought it would get him a laugh. But the nervous, uneasiness underlying wit, can be, as Nietzsche said, “the death of an emotion”, especially when a mind fettered by chatter is more concerned about protecting itself, than engaging in debate. For if and when one must resort to ‘dissin or “shit slinging” instead of constructive engagement, then it is not only emotion that suffers, but truth itself. Ronald Reagan, another Mercurial-Jovial, was masterful at this; earning the accolade as the “Great Communicator” with his jabs. But they often served to distract from an issue rather than confront it.

The character of Mercury, or Hermes in the earlier Greek mythology, was known as the messenger of the Gods. But more so, he is known as the bringer of medicines and healing. His most significant messages were those that made pronouncements which blasted away rhetoric with polemics and prophetics which could rattle the foundations of any argument or rattle the cage, or the confidence, of any arguer.

Today, there are but a few with the courage to act in Mercury’s stead. Some like Keith Olbermann (+Saturn or Rachael Maddow (+lunar) on the American Left, and but to his credit another on the Right: recent Presidential Jon Huntsmans(+Solar), are all Mercurial’s more willing to speak the unspeakable; sometimes with a halting staccato of appended phrases (like President Obama), or in tune with a progression of syllables which would make any ones head spin from eloquence like Olbermann.

But the underlying strength of this qualities lies in its ability to above a fray and seek out what is clearest and reach its goal the fastest. Yet, like so many of those great Mercurial messengers of the past, like Jesus and Martin Luther King, they fell prey to the old edict that comes along with delivering a true message that is not liked and vehemently opposed: namely, kill the messenger!

Perhaps the best thing for a Mercurial messenger once they have delivered their powerful news is: run like you have wings on your feet!
